106 degree weather?!

From the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
  • Drink more fluids (nonalcoholic), regardless of your activity level. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Warning: If your doctor generally limits the amount of fluid you drink or has you on water pills, ask him how much you should drink while the weather is hot.
  • Don’t drink liquids that contain alcohol or large amounts of sugar — these actually cause you to lose more body fluid. Also, avoid very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps.
  • Stay indoors and, if at all possible, stay in an air-conditioned place. If your home does not have air conditioning, go to the shopping mall or public library–even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat. Call your local health department to see if there are any heat-relief shelters in your area.
  • Electric fans may provide comfort, but when the temperature is in the high 90s, fans will not prevent heat-related illness. Taking a cool shower or bath, or moving to an air-conditioned place is a much better way to cool off.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • NEVER leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle.
Although any one at any time can suffer from heat-related illness, some people are at greater risk than others. Check regularly on:
  • Infants and young children
  • People aged 65 or older
  • People who have a mental illness
  • Those who are physically ill, especially with heart disease or high blood pressure
  • Visit adults at risk at least twice a day and closely watch them for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Infants and young children, of course, need much more frequent watching.
If you must be out in the heat:
  • Cut down on exercise. If you must exercise, drink two to four glasses of cool, nonalcoholic fluids each hour. A sports beverage can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat. Warning: If you are on a low-salt diet, talk with your doctor before drinking a sports beverage. Remember the warning in the first “tip” (above), too.
  • Try to rest often in shady areas.
  • Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat (also keeps you cooler) and sunglasses and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher (the most effective products say “broad spectrum” or “UVA/UVB protection” on their labels).

Getting Ready...

I'm not trying to rush the month of June, but I do love the 4th of July!
I'm so excited about it that I've started carting out my red wagon,
white lights and blue bottles from storage.

Tonight, as I sat on the back porch and counted fireflies by candlelight,

I thought about building a fire pit in the backyard.

Realistically, I might not get that done by the holiday!

my old wagon that was holding lawn supplies and parked under some junk in the garage.

my $11 chairs from Target

would all sit great out here in the yard

because I think I want to build the fire pit

So this is what I have so far:

Thanks to Pinterest I have saved a bunch of ideas and d.i.y. instructions on house to build something similar from the stuff I already have!

The garden seat came from Ross a few months ago, the pillows are from Goodwill, and various sales, wagon was in the garage, candles (from all over the house), 5 chairs from Target's 70% off sale!

Time to rest up and get to work!

If I lived a simpler life...

I'd sell all of my possessions, quit my jobs and go feed the hungry with the proceeds...

Then I'd think of an ad campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving...

Then I'd make sure some people without good, clean water
had a plentiful supply of it...

And maybe, after I've figured out a way not to leave my family with a bunch of debt after I die, I'd settle down in a modest, minimal home with a vintage car...

and a delightful little friend with warm eyes...

then I'd read and write a bit...

and take in all the wonders of God...

well, that's pretty much it!

Not so Modern, but very Grateful!

Have an action packed Saturday planned!

I'm headed to the Modern Atlanta Tour of Homes, and

I'm so excited and grateful for all blessings, breath, and beauty today, I can hardly 'contain' myself!

I promise to have lots of photos to show you. (see below)

Okay my friends, this is a two part post! Now that I've completed the tour, I honestly have to say to myself, I love both Traditional and Modern styles, so why choose?!

Here are some of my pictures, I must backup because my hard drive is nearly FULL!

Sleepyhead ...

This morning I was dreaming of my dream bed in my dream house on the beach.
You know the one that I have and spend endless amounts of time in because I don't work 3 jobs, I'm a stay at home mother, without the kids, and of course, money is No object!
So in the dream, all the linens are crisp, like the sea air...

As a matter of fact, I have unique pillows on all surfaces in my beach dream home...

 and gorgeous paintings too...

and I like to light candles and leave them lit ALL over the house,

along with soft cashmere throws, just in case it gets a bit chilly...

and in my dream I made an impromptu arrangement out of magnolia leaves.

put more candles in the fireplace (lit of course)

swiveled around in my blue linen chair

that sits right beside a golden lamp...

watered the ferns on the porch

fluffed some more chairs for guests

read a book about vogue in my spare time

and petted a sweet doggie that blended in with the floor

then gazed out to this view...

But it was just my imagination,
Running away with me,
It was just my imagination...
Running awwwaaaayy with meeeeee.......

;-)
